This course is designed to help students become better learners, better thinkers, and more confident people. The course is also designed to enhance the student’s mastery of the English language. Saint Mary’s County schools follow the nationally-aligned Common Core set of educational standards. To meet these standards, this class, and all language arts classes, will use multiple resources that will support and focus on higher-order skills thinking skills, communication, and problem-solving. We will be studying a number of different topics in this class. These include (but are not limited to): writing (informational, narrative, and argumentative), reading (narratives, novels, short stories, cultural literature, informational texts, biographies), poetry (reading and writing), public speaking, advertising, research. Some days will be “hands-on.” Some days will not. Ultimately, students will be provided with the tools and motivation to become better English speakers, readers, and writers.
